Canada’s most trusted retailer Mountain Equipment Company, MEC welcomes climbing legend Sean McColl to the team.
For more than two decades, North Vancouver based McColl has been a competitive sport climbing force. His accomplishments span the globe – and have landed him 34 World Cup medals, 12 Canadian Open National Champion titles, and the honour of qualifying for and competing in climbing’s first-ever Olympic Games at Tokyo 2020.
Sean’s record-setting achievements as a young climber still stand today, and he is passionate about passing on his expertise to the next generation of climbers. He has served as head coach for the Canadian Youth National Teams, helping build the next generation of crushers. Outside of the gym, his crag credentials include onsighting 5.14a (8b+) and climbing multiple 5.14d’s (9a). On the bouldering side, Sean is one of a dozen climbers in the world to flash the grade of V13 (8B) and redpoint V15 (8C).
In addition to his climbing career, Sean is a multi-talented individual who has completed grade 9 Royal Conservatory Piano and is a “speedcuber”- can solve a Rubik’s cube ridiculously fast. He also has first-hand knowledge of working at an MEC store when he was in high school. From MEC staffer to Ambassador – we love it.
Looking ahead, Sean is focused on qualifying for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris and continuing to support Canada’s Competitive climbing program. He aims to eventually coach athletes on their quest for the Olympics and inspire the next generation of record-setting climbers.
“We are thrilled to welcome Sean McColl to our team of ambassadors”, said Caitlin Brown, Senior Manager for Community Marketing at MEC. “Sean’s accomplishments in the climbing world are truly impressive, and we look forward to working with him to inspire Canadians to get outside and explore their own climbing potential”.
Sean McColl added “I’m excited to join the MEC family as a climbing Ambassador. MEC has always been a part of my life, from working at the store after high school to always being a consistent force in the outdoor and climbing communities. I share a lot of values and commitments with MEC, and look forward to working alongside the team to inspire others to reach their own lofty goals”.
